For London's Ultra Low Emission Zone, petrol cars generally need to meet Euro 4 and diesel cars Euro 6. As a rough guide that means most petrol cars first registered from 2006 onwards and most diesels from September 2015 onwards, but the registration date is only a guide. Some manufacturers met the standard early and some models lagged behind, which is why the Euro status recorded against your specific vehicle is the figure that counts, not the year on the plate.
Clean Air Zones now operate in Birmingham, Bristol, Bath, Bradford, Sheffield, Tyneside, Portsmouth and elsewhere, and Scotland's Low Emission Zones cover central Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen. They do not all use identical rules, and some charge private cars while others target taxis, vans and lorries only. What they share is that eligibility is assessed on the Euro standard, so knowing yours tells you where you stand in any of them.
Two cars of the same age and model can carry different Euro classifications depending on the exact engine and when it was type approved. Imports are a common trap, as are cars registered right on the boundary of a standard changing. If you are about to buy, or you drive into a zone regularly, checking the recorded Euro status is the only way to be sure rather than assuming from the year.

Diesels generally need to meet Euro 6, which most cars first registered from September 2015 onwards do. Earlier diesels usually are not compliant, though some manufacturers met the standard ahead of the deadline, so the recorded status is worth checking rather than assuming.
