Euro NCAP tightens its criteria every few years, so a five star rating from 2012 is not the same achievement as a five star rating today. A modern three star car may well protect occupants better than an older five star one. When comparing two cars of different ages, the underlying adult and child scores are more informative than the star count on its own.
Adult and child occupant protection are scored separately, and they can diverge sharply on the same car. If you carry children regularly, the child score and the number of proper seating positions matter more than the headline. The report shows both alongside the body type, seat count and kerb weight, which is the practical picture of what the car can carry safely.
