Cars are frequently manufactured months before they are sold, so a car built in late one year can be first registered early the next. It matters more than it sounds: the registration date decides which road tax system applies, when the first MOT falls due, and how the car is described when you sell it. Where the two differ, the report shows both.
The two digits in a modern registration indicate the six month period the car was first registered in, running from March and September. That is a reliable guide unless a private plate has been fitted, which hides it completely. It also says nothing about when the car was built, and nothing at all about an import, which may have spent years abroad before being registered here.
